On 20 November 2009 a very important and relevant new document, called the Manhattan Declaration, was signed in the US by 140 Christian leaders - Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical. Thousands of ordinary citizens also added their signatures.

This document is a perfect example of genuine ecumenism in action.

It is about time that something positive was done to confront the continued attacks on the Christian faith, and this is what the Manhattan Declaration does, taking on those who are undermining the sanctity of human life, the importance of traditional heterosexual marriage and the rights of conscience and religious liberty.

The Declaration states among other things, 'Because we honour justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent ...'.

Nothing wishy-washy there! Australian Christian leaders and laity take note, and act likewise. After all, Jesus Christ was not a wimp, as the New Testament conclusively demonstrates.
