Letters Clarification (letter)I am relieved to report that since the publication of my letter (November AD2000, p. 13), Dr Tim Coyle and I have talked together. We have clarified that Tim was certainly not himself proposing a "kind of schism". Rather he was alerting us all to a danger - "the future possibility of a kind of schism". We are both of one mind that such initiatives by "wealthy parishioners ... to obtain priests from elsewhere ... without the bishop's permission" would seriously wound the Church universally and locally. I trust that our correspondence on this matter has been of service, cautioning against extremist reactions to the difficult situations, within the Church and in the world, which we are all called to face honestly and hopefully. BISHOP JAMES FOLEY Reprinted from AD2000 Vol 13 No 11 (December 2000 - January 2001), p. 14 |
