Reflection: The essential role of the Catholic priest - Fr John A. Hardon SJ

ON 9 DECEMBER 2000, Pope John Paul II announced the appointment of Tasmanian priest, Fr Geoffrey Jarrett, as the successor to Lismore's Bishop John Satterthwaite.

A former Anglican vicar, Father Jarrett was parish priest of Sacred Heart Church in the Archdiocese of Hobart, and is only the second Tasmanian priest to be made a bishop in Australia.

Like Bishop Luc Matthys, who was appointed to Armidale in northern New South Wales in 1999, Father Jarrett has been an active member of the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy, an organisation noted for its strong support for the Holy Father and Church teachings.

In coming months, at least eight new bishops will need to be appointed to vacant dioceses where retirements have occured or are soon to occur.
