Catholic education
June See

Congratulations to Eamonn Keane for his excellent article,
'Rediscovering the real history of Australian Catholic
education' (September AD2000).
Many poor Catholic people who came to Australia in the 19th and
20th centuries, at great expense to themselves, sent their children
to Catholic schools for a sound education and for the 'faith
of their fathers'.
Their children were given a solid education in the four 'Rs' and
inspired in their faith by the example of the nuns and
brothers.
I do not agree at all with Dr Graham English's assessment of
Catholic education, past and present.
