Letters Religious attireCongratulations AD2000! At last a Catholic publication has been moved to print the opinion of the majority evaded by the trendier elements in the Church. Fr James Lloyd's contribution (May AD2000), 'New religious communities flourishing in the United States', confronts the issues of priests and religious abandoning their distinctive attire in favour of civilian clothing. The result has been, in Queensland at least, that they have become invisible, apart from those imposters utilised by advertisers or the organisers of demonstrations. Opportunities for respect and practical advertising for vocations are lost when priests and religious can no longer be identified in public. Can Fr Lloyd be enticed to migrate to Australia?
