Reflection: The new evangelisation: 'missionary spirit' needed - Fr Dennis W. Byrnes

Living on the opposite side of our continent, I have always been an admirer from afar of Archbishop Hickey, so naturally I found Brian Peachey's excellent article on the Perth leader both informative and most interesting (June AD2000). I was not aware of a number of Brian's anecdotes, however they simply confirmed the high opinion I have of the Archbishop.

Even though it is incumbent on a bishop, when he reaches seventy-five years of age, to offer his resignation to the Pope, I believe that if the bishop believes he is still up to the task, it would be worthwhile, in the case of someone of Archbishop Hickey's qualities, for the Holy Father to offer him the option of continuing until such time as he himself feels the need to retire.
