Events G.K. Chesterton conference for Sydney - September 2011A one-day G.K. Chesterton conference will take place on 10 September 2011 at Campion College in Sydney. It is sponsored by the Australian Chesterton Society and titled "Faith in the Marketplace: The Social Catholicism of G.K. Chesterton Revisited". The Society operates under the patronage of Cardinal Pell. The Conference will explore the new opportunities for the Catholic social philosophy of Distributism in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), and the faltering, if not failure, of the world's predominant economic systems of capitalism and socialism. The time is ripe, the Chesterton Society believes, for a truly Catholic economic and social vision to be represented. The Conference will give special attention to the first social encyclicals, Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum (1891) and Pius XI's Quadragesimo Anno (1931), whose special anniversaries occur in 2011. The speakers will include Race Mathews, author of Jobs of Our Own, Garrick Small, Associate Professor, Central Queensland University, Susie Byers, PhD student, University of Western Australia, and Karl Schmude, President, Australian Chesterton Society. For further information, including registration and payment ($55.00) contact Karl Schmude: k.schmude_at_campion.edu.au or 0407-721-458. Reprinted from AD2000 Vol 24 No 6 (July 2011), p. 4 |
