Letters Obvious LinkI read Babette Francis' recent article on the Global Financial Crisis and the West's fertility decline (March 2012) with great interest. I had been wondering for some time now why no one seems to have made the glaringly obvious (to me, at least) connection between low birth-rates and national financial stress. How could it be otherwise, when a strong taxpaying cohort is always needed to finance those who are dependent upon the public purse? As the number of dependants grows, the taxpaying cohort needs to grow too, or else be squeezed dry. Well done, Babette! C.V. PHILLIPS (MRS) Reprinted from AD2000 Vol 25 No 4 (May 2012), p. 15 |
