Congratulations on your journal. There have been some great articles - especially the one regarding Father Creede. It's a pity we are not fortunate so far in having him conduct a nine-day Family Mission.

The article on Bishop Wilson (February AD2000), while good, stated that Wollongong's Eucharistic Congress was the first one outside a capital city. This is not the case, as in 1938 Newcastle held a Eucharistic Congress. I have a medal from it, being honoured to be chief altar boy at a children's Mass celebrated by the late Bishop Barry of Goulburn. Special trains from all over the diocese brought thousands of children.

On the Sunday a great procession commenced from Sacred Heart Church (now Cathedral) Hamilton to No 1 sports ground. I walked backwards carrying the thurible and never slept better than that night.

The late Msgr Victor Peters VG was the chief organiser, being the first Newcastle-born priest and at the time of his death in 1960 was the oldest Australian-born priest. Credit is also due to him for the building of the beautiful cathedral in Maitland - then under the strong leadership of Bishop E. Gleeson CSsR.

I hope this letter brings joy and memories to readers, especially those in Newcastle.
