Letters
Common sense and married clergy
Errol Duke

This is the scenario. He is about to take his wife out to dinner
to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. The whole evening has
been carefully planned with the two children being looked after by
relatives overnight.
Then a call from the local hospital comes through. A Catholic
parishioner has been in a serious road accident and needs
anointing.
Yes, the local married Catholic priest now has to make an
agonising choice. Which Master does he now serve?
Recently I used this example to dampen a conversation by two
Catholic friends who were advocating a married priesthood. They
conceded defeat immediately on the basis of pure common sense.
Church law needed no mention whatever.
